List Type Custom Contact Fields

What is a "list" type Custom Contact Field?

A "list" type Custom Contact Field allows you to define a set of predefined values that users can select for a contact. When creating or editing this type of field, you can add your own values, change their order, and delete them. This ensures data consistency and simplifies data entry for your team.

What is the difference between a single-select and a multi-select list Custom Contact Field?

A single-select list Custom Contact Field allows users to choose only one value from the predefined list for a contact. In contrast, a multi-select list Custom Contact Field enables users to select one or more values from the list for a single contact. You can enable the multi-select option when creating or editing a "list" type field by checking the "Allow multiple selections" checkbox. Note that you can change a single-select list to a multi-select list after creation, but you cannot change a multi-select list back to single-select or to any other field type.


Visibility of Custom Contact Fields

What visibility options are available for Custom Contact Fields?

When setting up a Custom Contact Field, you can choose whether it will be visible for People contacts, Organization contacts, or both. Simply check the corresponding boxes in the visibility settings. It's important to note that Custom Contact Fields are not currently available for Client Groups.


Where Custom Contact Fields Appear

Where do Custom Contact Fields appear on a contact?

Custom Contact Fields are displayed in the basic section of a contact's Details tab. They are automatically arranged in alphabetical order.


Naming Restrictions

Can I use existing contact field names for my Custom Contact Fields?

No, you cannot use a name for your Custom Contact Field that is already used by a standard Karbon contact field (e.g., you cannot create a custom field named "First Name" or "Email"). This prevents confusion and ensures data integrity.


Custom Contact Fields and Segments

Can I export a list of contacts based on a segment that uses Custom Contact Fields?

Yes, absolutely. Once you have created and applied a segment that utilizes Custom Contact Fields as filter criteria, you can export a list of the contacts included in that segment. Look for the Filtered Contact Export option after the segment has been applied.


Availability on Contact Types

On which types of contacts are Custom Contact Fields available?

Custom Contact Fields can be created and used for both People and Organization contacts in Karbon, based on the visibility settings you choose when creating the field.


Availability for Client Groups

Are Custom Contact Fields available for Client Groups?

No, Custom Contact Fields are not currently available for Client Groups in Karbon.


Modifying Custom Contact Field Types

Can I change the type of a Custom Contact Field after it has been created?

No, generally, you cannot change the type of a Custom Contact Field once it has been saved. The exception to this is that you can change a single-select "list" type field to a multi-select "list" type field. However, you cannot change a multi-select list back to a single-select list or to any other field type. Therefore, it's important to choose the correct field type when initially creating your Custom Contact Field.


Ordering of Custom Contact Fields

Can I rearrange the order in which Custom Contact Fields appear on a contact?

No, Custom Contact Fields are automatically displayed in alphabetical order within the basic information section of a contact's Details tab. You cannot manually rearrange their order.
